Individual therapy is a one-on-one session between you and a psychologist. The main goal is to help you understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and to work through personal challenges in a safe, confidential and non judgemental space.
Starting your journey might bring up a number of emotions for you. You might be anxious or worried, or feeling increased vulnerabilty. This is normal. You’re not expected to share everything right away. It’s okay to take your time. We will work with your at your pace and meet you where you are at in your journey.
Your first session is usually about getting to know you and setting the foundation for future work. It also gives you the opportunity to ask your psychologist any questions.
Your psychologist will introduce themselves, explain their approach, and go over confidentiality and service agreements.
Remember, you only need to share what you are comfortable with. You can take your time and we will work with you on that. Generally speaking, we will ask you a number of questions to help u s understand the breadth of your problem, or problems you are struggling with. This might inclu de questions about your background, relationships or past experiences. We will talk about why you’re seeking therapy now, your journey so far - what’s been going on, w hat you’re struggling with, and what you hope to get out of therapy. We will collaboratively set goals and talk about what future treatment sessions might look like.
After our initial session, we will develop a future treatment plan that is aligned to your needs, timeframes and availability. What this might look like is different for everyone, but might include a number or weekly, fortnightly or monthly sessions to help you work on your goals.
